Packing and Storage Tips

Pack Smart, Store Smart

Tip #1:  Inspect the storage space when renting.

Tip #2:  Know the number and size of boxes needed. Packing supplies needed are newsprint or wrapping paperw, shrink wwrap, packing tape, furniture and mattress covers.

Tip #3:  Place heavier items in the bottom of the box with lighter items on top.

Tip #4:  Fill boxes to capacity. Partially full boxes tend to tip or collapse.

Tip #5:  Pack books and heavy items in small boxes to avoid the box being too heavy.

Tip #6:  Protect fragile items with bubble wrap or packing peanuts. Place fragile items on top in boxes. Write "FRAGILE" on the exterior of the box.

Tip #7:  Label boxes to make it easier to locate the items later.

Tip #8:  When placing the items in the storage space, leave a gap between the items and the walls. Leaving a gap allows air flow around your items.

Tip #9:  Leave an aisle to walk to the back of the storage space to easily reach items in the rear.

Tip #10: Keep items used frequently in the front of the storage space closest to the door.  Place less used items to the back.

Tip #11: Disassemble items to take up less space.

Tip #12: Do not overload your boxes.

Other Packing Tips

Appliances - A refrigerator or freezer should be thoroughly dry and stored with its door slightly ajar.  Smaller items can be stored on the shelves inside of large appliances.

Books & Documents - Do not place boxes containing books and documents directly on the concrete floor.  Place a barrier between the concrete and the box of books and documents.

Clothing - Clean clothing can be carefully folded and stored in dresser drawers.  Do not store dirty clothing.  Dirty clothing can attract rodents.

Food Crumbs - Do not bring anything with food crumbs into your storage space.  All stains and food crumbs should be removed before storing any items with stains or food crumbs.  Avoid storing anything that will attract rodents.

Dishes & Glassware - Plates are the strongest when standing on their edge and nest bowls.  All glass items should be individually wrapped and placed near the top of the box or container.

Furniture - Place a pallet, cardboard, or plastic sheet on the floor and stand the sofa and mattresses on end.  Chairs without arms can be stacked seat to seat.

Lamps & Shades - Pack delicate lampshades separately from the lamp.  Do not stack heavier items on top of boxes with lampshades in them.

Mirrors, Windows & Window Screens - These items should be stored on edge not laying flat. Prop them behind something so they won't fall.

Tools - Metal tools should be cleaned and wiped with a rag containing a few drops of machine oil to retard rust.

Valuables - Take your valuables with you.  You shouldn't store valuable items, items of sentimental value or artwork in a storage space.
